The Grand Canyon University women's tennis team claimed their first win in Division I with a thrilling 6-1 win over Texas-El Paso today at the Robson Tennis Center in Tucson, Ariz.
The win improves the Antelopes to 1-2, UTEP falls to 1-4.
"The women won a thriller today and we are excited to post our first Division I win of the season," said head coach Greg Prudhomme. "We did it the GCU way, winning with a lot of a great attitude and effort. We started with three strong performances at the doubles and were able to win two of them. In the singles we were down by a set on five courts. It was a great team effort to battle back and win four of them. This is how it is going to be at D-I. There will not be any easy matches and it was great to pull through."
The doubles duos of
Janaki Gunuganti and
Frederique Van de Velde and
Silvia Tumova and
Alexandra Petrzalkova cruised to wins that put GCU up 1-0.
Priscilla Annoual and
Tatum Prudhomme just missed out on a win, falling 7-6, but proving once again they will be a tough out this season at the No. 1 doubles position.
Annoual, Prudhomme, Tumova and
Raquel Gonzales all dropped the first set in their singles matches, but each rallied to win the second set and match tiebreaker.
Janaki Gunuganti rounded out the Antelopes' day with a convincing 6-3, 6-1 win in her singles match.
Grand Canyon will be off until Feb.21 and 22, when they will play three matches in two days. The Antelopes will face Illinois-Chicago and South Dakota State on the 21
st and will play Chicago State on the 22
nd.
