The Grand Canyon University women's tennis team kicked off a busy weekend with a pair of matches today. The Antelopes dropped their opening match 4-3 to Illinois-Chicago at the Match Point Center in Griffith, Ind. The squad then loaded the vans and made the short trip to Homewood, Ill. where they knocked off South Dakota State 4-3.
The men played NAIA St. Francis and cruised to a 9-0 sweep.
In the opening match against UIC, the GCU women positioned themselves well for a chance for the win. Trailing 1-0 heading into the singles round, the top three Antelope women were able to secure match wins, including a three-set win by
Janaki Gunuganti . She won her third set in a tiebreaker (7-3).
GCU had an opportunity to win the crucial fourth point, but fell just short.
Silvia Tumova warded off match points in the second set to even her match at one-set apiece by virtue of her 7-5 set win. She then jumped out to a 5-2 lead in the final set, but was unable to close out the win.
Priscilla Annoual improved to 3-0 this season at No. 1 singles with her 6-1, 6-2 win.
Grand Canyon swept the doubles for the first time this season, giving them a 1-0 lead over the Jackrabbits in the nightcap.
Annoual dominated once again, winning at No. 1 singles 6-2, 6-1. Teammate
Tatum Prudhomme recorded her third win of the season, winning 6-2, 6-0 at No. 2 singles. Gunuganti was a straight-sets winner.
GCU's 1-2-3 singles spots have now posted a 10-4 overall match record this season.
The Canyon women now stand at 2-3 overall this season.
"It sure was a long day today as the girls put in seven hours of match play today," said head coach Greg Prudhomme. "You don't get doubleheaders in tennis often because you can't substitute players in and out of the game. With that said, I was really proud of the girls for playing two hard-fought matches. When you play a doubleheader you are hoping you don't play a 4-3 match, let alone playing two in the same day. It was a great team effort for the girls to bounce back and win the second one."
The men cruised in their 9-0 win over St. Francis, not dropping a single set, to up their overall record to 3-3.
Nicolas Moulin won 6-2, 6-0 at No. 1 singles, while
Meidy Chazeau blanked his opponent 6-0, 6-0, at No. 6.
"The men had a nice warm up to gauge the courts and will hopefully take that momentum into tomorrow's match with WAC foe, Chicago State," added Prudhomme.
The women and men will both face Chicago State tomorrow in Homewood. The men's match will begin at 1:30 p.m. (AZ time), with the women starting at 4:00 p.m. (AZ time).
