Grand Canyon's men's and women's tennis teams opened Western Athletic Conference play with wins over Chicago State at the H-F Racquet and Fitness Club in Homewood, Ill.
The men's team won 6-1 and the women were 4-1 victors.
"Happy to win the first-ever WAC matches for the men and women. It's good to start conference with a winning record," said GCU coach Greg Prudhomme.
For the men, GCU won five of six singles matches and swept the doubles competition to earn the doubles point.
No. 1
Nicolas Moulin had a battle on his hands before taking a 6-1, 3-6, 6-3 win over Sergiu Muresan. The other singles wins, by
Adrian Legarreta,
Felix Schueller,
Benjamin Collomb and
Alexander Roggenkamp, were in straight sets.
"We got the doubles point and never let up," said Prudhomme. "It was good all-around team performance."
The women clinched the doubles point by winning the first two matches and clinched the team win by securing their third singles victory. One doubles match and two singles matches, with GCU leading in two of the three, were halted after the Antelopes had guaranteed themselves the win.
It was the third match in two days for the women.
"I was especially happy with our women's team winning their third match in two days," said Prudhomme. It was a great performance from our No. 1, 2, 3 players. All three have won three in a row and a great effort from our doubles teams to start the momentum off."
Priscilla Annoual,
Tatum Prudhomme and
Janaki Gunuganti won singles matches in straight sets.
"It was a good day at the courts and on the road to start WAC play," added Prudhomme.
Both teams won their second straight match. The men are 4-3 and the women improved to 3-3. The women's team will play Sunday, in Homewood, Ill., against Detroit Mercy.
