Grand Canyon University head men's soccer coach Petar Draksin today announced the addition of two student-athletes to the program for the 2014 season: Kendyl Day from Gilbert, Ariz., and Amare Thomas from Pleasantville, Trinidad and Tobago.
Day is a 6-3 goalkeeper out of Basha High School, where he lettered for four years in soccer. He earned Defensive Player of the Year honors during his sophomore campaign. He also spent one year at Mesa Community College, where he was an ACCAC Region 1 First Team selection in 2013.
Day started 21 games for the Thunderbirds last season, picking up 127 saves and five shutouts.
"Kendyl is definitely going to have a presence at the net with his 6-3 frame," said head coach Petar Draksin. "He had a great year at Mesa Community College, and it's exciting to get a student-athlete like Kendyl and have him for three years. He had success in his first year at the junior college level, and we feel very strong that he will compete for the starting position. It is also great that to add such a talented local athlete to the program."
Thomas, a 5-8 forward out of Monroe College in New York, led his college team with 15 goals and seven assists last season. His total goals last season ranked 29th among all NJCAA athletes. He also had two games in 2013 where he recorded three goals, and three multi-goal games overall. At Presentation College in Trinidad and Tobago (high school), he earned a number of honors, including Best Young Player in 2008 and 2009, and Footballer of the Year in 2010.
He also earned Most Valuable Player honors at the Dallas FC Soccer Camp in 2009. In 2010, he was given the Golden Boot Award with the W Connection Football Club U18.
"Amare was recruited by a few Division I schools, so we are very excited to land a player of Amare's caliber," added Draksin. "He will be a player similar to the type that Saeed Robinson (Division II First Team All-America) was. He has a tremendous amount of speed, and is very technical, so I have no doubt that Amare will impact our offense right away. He will assist and score quite a few goals for us. Amare has an impressive resume from high school and at Monroe College and we are very fortunate to land him at GCU."
