The Grand Canyon University men's golf team stands in fifth place following the opening two rounds of play at the Jim Colbert Intercollegiate, hosted by Kansas State University at the Colbert Hills Golf Course in Manhattan, Kan. The Antelopes shot a combined 44-over 620 through 36 holes on the par-72 course.
"The course is really tough, and today was a very long day, but I was very happy with our effort," said head coach Mark Mueller. "Nobody gave in and the guys kept grinding. Hopefully we can play better tomorrow and our goal is to crack the top-three among a tough field of teams."
Host Kansas State leads the tournament after shooting a 22-over 598. Sam Houston State is two strokes behind the Wildcats to hold the second spot, while Creighton rounds out the top-three at 38-over 614.
South Dakota is just two strokes ahead of GCU in the team standings.
Alec Dahlquist leads the 'Lopes as he is currently tied for fifth with a six-over 150. Sam Houston State's Zach Cabra is in first place with a four-under 140, four strokes ahead of Kansas State's Alex Carney, who is competing as an individual.
Mark Geddes is tied for 18
th after shooting an 11-over 155, while teammate
Hayden Webb is four strokes behind and tied for 30
th.
Billy Flower is currently tied for 36
th after carding an 18-over 162.
"I was very pleased with Alec today," added Mueller. "I was also proud of Mark and
Mariano Rossi, they both showed a lot of guts and didn't quit. Hayden played very well in the first round. Everyone kept playing strong, which was good to see."
"Overall, I am very pleased with their effort," said Mueller. "We are looking forward to tomorrow."
