The Grand Canyon University men’s golf team made a late charge on the back nine to claim their fifth Pacific West Conference Championship in the past seven years today at the Wigwam Golf Resort in Litchfield Park, Ariz.
Junior
Jimmy Kozikowski was the medalist after winning the individual championship in a one-hole playoff against Hawai’i Hilo’s Dalen Yamauchi.
The Antelopes entered the day with a nine-shot deficit to Hilo and fell behind by doubles digits at points during today’s round. Kozikowski,
Mark Geddes and
Alec Dahlquist combined to post a 5-under 103 over the last nine holes to secure the win. In the end, the ‘Lopes fired a 286 to finish with a 12-over 588 and a five-shot win over the Vulcans (593).
“It was great to see our guys come back as they did today,” said assistant coach Mark Mueller. “Yesterday was quite an eventful day and our guys were naturally a bit down. I’m happy for them and it shows what this team is made of and the opportunities they have in front of them.”
Kozikowski had five birdies on the back nine and used a daring second shot in the playoff to earn him his second win on his home course this season. He shot a season-low round of 68 today and carded a 36-hole total of 4-under 144.
“Jimmy is a very good player,” added Mueller. “When he stays in it mentally and remains patient he is the best player out here and possibly the best in Division II.”
GCU’s Geddes and Dahlquist finished in a tie for third, two shots behind Kozikowski, with 146’s.
Grand Canyon will next travel to the NCAA West-Central Super Regional Championships at The Home Course in DuPont, Wash. from May 6-8. The Antelopes finished second on this same course a few weeks back during the NCAA Division II Regional Preview.
“The regional tournament is going to be tough and we know only the top five teams go to the nationals,” said Mueller. “We have to play well there and if we have a bad week we will make it hard on ourselves. But if we go in and take care of our business and do what we do we will be fine. This is a good start to our postseason, but our ultimate goal is getting into the national tournament.”
