The Grand Canyon University men’s golf team is in fifth after shooting a 36-hole total 16-over 576 at the 17
th Del Walker Intercollegiate Golf Classic in Long Beach, Calif.
The tournament is being hosted by Long Beach State and features seven D-I schools.
Pacific, ranked 78
th by GolfStat in D-I, leads the field with a 4-under 556.
“I was really impressed with how fast our guys started out today, said men’s assistant coach Mark Mueller. “Being our first tournament of the spring, I don’t think we could have asked for much more. We slipped a bit in the middle of the second round, but I feel the guys will be ready to come out firing tomorrow and think we can position ourselves with a top-three finish out here against a solid Division I field.”
The Antelopes came out quickly and led through most of the first 18 holes, before finishing the opening round in third with a 283, just three shots off the lead.
Liam Brace is the highest placed Antelope and sits in a tie for 10
th after carding a 1-over 141. Alex Edfort of Pacific leads all individuals with a 5-under 135.
GCU’s
Mark Geddes and
Alec Dahlquist are tied for 19
th with 4-over 144’s.
Brace had seven birdies over the opening two rounds, while Geddes chipped in six.
The final round of the Del Walker Intercollegiate Golf Classic will be played tomorrow on the Par-70 Virginia Country Club course. The tournament is the first for the men this spring season.
