The 14
th-ranked Grand Canyon University women’s tennis team wrapped up a busy opening two weekends of action with a 9-0 win over Dominican, today at Paseo Racquet Center in Glendale, Ariz.
The Antelopes improved to 7-1, while Dominican fell to 1-6.
The 9-0 sweep was the fourth in eight matches this season for GCU.
“This was a great way for us to cap playing eight matches in 13 days,” said head coach Greg Prudhomme. “This was the most brutal start to a season our women have ever had. We have always had a crazy opening weekend, but to do it over two weekends and end it with a bang is truly impressive.”
GCU won in straight sets in five of six singles matches, but the No. 2 tilt provided to be the most contested.
Katharina Mittag dropped the opening set to the Penguins’ Gaby Verspieren, but rallied to win 6-3 in the second and then rally again for a 10-8 win in the match tiebreak.
Jordan Bridges made quick work of her No. 6 singles match, winning 6-0, 6-0.
“We are right where we want to be and are stronger than we were last year,” added Prudhomme. “We are optimistic about reaching our goals this season and know we still have some very tough matches ahead of us. We still have work to do and reaching our goals will not be easy, but we have the team in place to do it.”
The next match for the women will be on March 1 at 9:30 a.m. when they will host Colorado Mesa. The following day they will make the trip down the I-10 to face the University of Arizona in Tucson.
