The 18
th-ranked Grand Canyon University men’s soccer team defeated Azusa Pacific, 2-1, tonight in Phoenix, Ariz. With the win, the Antelopes improved to 7-2-0 overall and 4-1-0 in the Pacific West Conference. The Cougars fell to 5-3-1 overall and 3-2-0 in conference play.
The win was the third in a row for GCU and their first at home since defeating then-top-ranked Fort Lewis on Sept. 7.
“Tonight, we had two beautiful goals,” said head coach Petar Draksin. “Zoran had an awesome goal on the corner kick and Brandon has been great that last two games. He has really come into his own. We kind of got comfortable after we scored our second goal, got a little tired. Azusa is traditionally a good soccer program, I have tremendous respect for them. We welcome them to our conference and are glad that they are here.”
GCU used a 17-10 advantage on shots to control the game as they had seven of those on goal. The Cougars finished with 10 shots, half of which were on goal. GCU goalkeeper
Joshua Zehring collected four saves in the contest.
The ‘Lopes outshot the Cougars, 9-4, in the first half and had five shots on goal compared to two for Azusa Pacific.
GCU scored both goals in the first half in what was mostly a defensive effort from both sides.
Zoran Nincevic scored the first goal of the game on a corner kick from the right side of the net from
Stipe-Darko Medic in the 18
th minute. Just five minutes later,
Brandon Hansen found the back of the net on an assist from
Alberto Sanchez Garcia.
“We have to improve on being consistent,” said Draksin. “We need to play strong the whole 90 minutes because that is what great teams do. We are going to focus on being more consistent.”
The second half was also tightly contested as there was just one goal scored, as Azusa Pacific got on the board with a long shot from the center of the goal in the 81
st minute. The teams combined for just 14 shots, as the ‘Lopes once again held the advantage at 8-6.
“Every team is going to come out to play us hard,” added Draksin. “I approach every game the same way. Even though we were not consistent, we were able to come away with the win. We are taking it one game at a time. We are going to build on what we did tonight and take advantage of playing at home.”
The ‘Lopes will next be in action when they host Hawai’i Hilo on Wednesday at 5:45 p.m. on the GCU Soccer Field.
