The Grand Canyon University men’s golf team climbed to third after the second round of the NCAA D-II Men’s West/Central Regional Championship at the Wigwam Golf Resort in Litchfield, Ariz. The Antelopes have posted a 3-under 573 and trail first-place Chico State (9-under, 567) by six shots. The Colorado School of Mines hold down second place, two-shots ahead of the Antelopes.
The top five teams and top two individuals not with a qualifying team will advance to the NCAA Championships, which will be held on May 15-19 at the Cardinal Golf Club in Simpsonville, Kentucky.
GCU, who shot a round-best tying 288 today, will head into the third and final round of the 54-regional with an 11-shot cushion for entry into the NCAA Championships (CSU Monterey Bay is in sixth with a 584).
Ryan Mahoney is in sixth overall and is the highest-placed Antelope at 4-under 140. He has shot a 70 in both of the first two rounds. Mahoney has excelled on the Par 5’s, shooting 4-under on those holes.
Jim Knous of the Colorado School of Mines leads the individual competition with an 8-under 136.
GCU’s
Brandon Moore has carded 10 birdies in the opening 36-holes and is in a ninth-place tie at 2-under 142.
Tyler Wooldridge is one-shot behind Moore with a 143.
The third round of the 54-hole Men’s West/Central Regional Championship will be played tomorrow on the Par-72 Gold Course at the Wigwam Golf Resort. Start time for round three is scheduled for 7:30 a.m. Grand Canyon will begin their round at 12:50 p.m. and tee off from hole number one.
