The Grand Canyon University lacrosse team used a pair of dominate performances to win the Southwestern Lacrosse Conference Championship at Westview High School in San Diego, Calif.
The Antelopes defeated Biola, 12-6, to advance to the finals.
Grand Canyon wasted little time as they jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first and carried a 6-2 lead into intermission. They extended their lead to 9-2 after three quarters.
Carson Barton led the Antelopes with six goals and an assist.
Matt Mountain added three goals and two assists.
Andrew Hunter recorded seven saves in the win.
The championship game was a rematch from a game on March 24 in which Cal State Fullerton defeated the ‘Lopes, 11-9, in Temecula, Calif.
In their first meeting, the Titans led after the first quarter and at the half, causing the ‘Lopes to play from behind. This time, however, GCU jumped out to a 4-1 lead after the first quarter and 7-1 at the half. Fullerton closed to within four in the third quarter, 7-3, before the Antelopes closed out the 11-5 win.
The key to the championship victory came by winning 15 of the 20 face-offs in the game.
Freddie Martori and
Fred Whistle split time on the face-offs.
Hunter played solid in goal, registering 15 saves.
Barton scored four goals and finished the weekend with 10 tallies. Martori added two goals.
GCU, in its first season in the MCLA, will now advance to the national tournament where they will face the Savannah College of Art and Design on May 14 in Greenville, South Carolina. The game is scheduled to begin at 10:30 a.m. (Arizona time). This will be the first meeting between the Bees and Antelopes. SCAD went 8-3 this season and played in the Southeastern Lacrosse Conference.
