The 10th-seeded Grand Canyon University lacrosse team used a goal from Adam Schubert with five seconds remaining in the second overtime to down 7th-seed Savannah College of Art and Design, 6-5, today in Greenville, South Carolina.
The win improves the Antelopes’ overall record to 15-1 and sends them into the MCLA Quarterfinals where they will next face No. 2 seed Grand Valley State, tomorrow at 10:30 a.m. (Arizona time) in Greenville. GVSU won 18-5 in their first-round victory over Washington University.
The Antelopes and Bees waged a tightly-contested affair that saw the game tied at 2 after one quarter, 4-4 at the half and 5-5 at the end of regulation.
Schubert’s game winner came seconds after a SCAD foul and was assisted by Christian Abbott.
Kyle Mason led the Antelopes with two goals today. Carson Barton added a goal and assist.
Andrew Hunter, the MCLA Defensive Player of the Year, recorded 13 saves in picking up the win.
Fred Whistle dominated in the faceoffs, winnings 10 of 15.
"Andrew Hunter, the defense and face-off specialist, Trey Whistle, won this game for us," said head coach Manny Rapkin. "Defensive stop after defensive stop showed why I think we have the chance to be the best in MCLA Division II. If we play like this again tomorrow and our offense shows up, I really like our chances against a really strong squad in Grand Valley State."
Grand Valley State enters tomorrow’s game as the No. 1 ranked team in the LaxPower computer rankings poll. GVSU has a record of 17-1.
