The Grand Canyon University men’s tennis team has advanced to the quarterfinal round after their thrilling 5-4 win over Concordia (NY) today at the EP Tom Sawyer State Park in Louisville, Ky.
The Antelopes are scheduled to return to action at 2:00 p.m. (Arizona time) today and will face Augusta State at the Top Gun Tennis Academy in Louisville, Ky. Augusta State won 5-2 over Drury earlier in the day. Both teams were rained out yesterday, forcing them into playing two matches today.
The match this morning lasted over five hours and was tightly contested throughout.
Peter Kazianschuetz wrapped up the win for the ‘Lopes with a three-set victory at No. 4 singles. Kazianschuetz lost the first set and was the lone match still going as he captured the third set in a tie-breaker (7-5).
GCU entered the singles round up 2-1, but Concordia quickly gained the advantage with wins at No. 1 and No. 6 singles.
Frederic Schoelzel knotted the affair at 3-3 with a 6-3, 6-4 win at No. 2 singles.
After falling behind 4-3, GCU’s
Bastien Tonus grinded out a three-set victory, including 7-5 in the third set. Tonus’ win set the stage for Kazianschuetz, as all eyes focused on the deciding match.
The Antelopes opened the day with strong doubles play. Kazianschuetz teamed with Schoelzel to win 8-2 at No.1 doubles. Stephane Murray and Tonus won the final three games in their 8-6 win at No.2 doubles.
Augusta State enters the quarterfinals with an 18-9 overall record.
