The Grand Canyon University men’s golf team is in a tie for 10
th-place after the first round of the NCAA Championships at the par-72 Cardinal Club Golf Course in Simpsonville, KY. The Antelopes shot 4-over 292 and trail first-place Central Oklahoma (9-under, 279) by 13 shots. UNC Pembroke (285) is in second, while Western Washington sits in third (287).
The top eight teams after three rounds (54 holes) will qualify for match play to determine the 2012 NCAA Champion. The Antelopes are currently one shot out of the eighth spot.
Ryan Mahoney led the Antelopes, carding a 1-under 71 and is tied for 14
th. He had three birdies during his round and finished the back nine with a 34.
Josh Creel of Central Oklahoma leads the field after recording a 7-under 65. Zack Zempa of Indiana University of Pennsylvania is in second, three-shots behind Creel (68).
Grand Canyon’s
Tyler Wooldridge is tied for 23
rd with an even-par 72. He posted 36’s on both the front and back nine.
Mark Geddes fired a 2-under 34 during the back nine to finish the day with a 74 and a tie for 47
th overall.
Brandon Moore and
Marcus Synegal both posted 75’s today.
The second round of the 54-hole NCAA Men’s Championship will be played tomorrow on the Cardinal Club Golf Course. Grand Canyon is scheduled to begin their round at 4:30 a.m. (Arizona time).
