The Grand Canyon University men's and women's track and field teams are set for a busy weekend, as they will split action between the Don Kirby Tailwind Invitational in Albuquerque, N.M., the San Francisco State Distance Carnival in San Francisco, Calif., and the Mesa Classic in Mesa, Ariz. The latter two meets will have events tomorrow only, while the Don Kirby Invitational is scheduled for both tomorrow and Saturday.
A majority of the squad will travel to Albuquerque for the Tailwind Invitational hosted by the University of New Mexico at the Great Friends of UNM Track Stadium. Tomorrow's events will start at 4 p.m., while Saturday's competition will get underway at 9:30 a.m.
Among the teams competing in Albuquerque are Utah State, Northern Arizona, New Mexico State, Wichita State, UTEP and Oklahoma State.
Kipkorir Mutai and
Sharles Simon are slated to participate in the 10,000-meter run at San Francisco State at 8:45 a.m. tomorrow.
Several athletes will also compete at the Mesa Classic hosted by Mesa Community College tomorrow. Events are scheduled to begin at 10 a.m.
Following the first three meets of the outdoor season, the 'Lopes have collected two automatic qualifiers and 40 provisional marks.
AAron Hill (long jump) reached automatic marks at the Baldy Castillo Invitational.
Among Division II athletes in the outdoor season so far,
Ann-Marie Duffus owns the best long jump with a leap of 5.96 meters. The 4x100-meter relay squad of
Brianne Kee, Duffus,
Petra Fanty and
Shavine Hodges has the top time in the event with 45.70 seconds. Hodges has the second-fastest times in the 100-meter (11.79 seconds) and 200-meter (23.98 seconds) dashes.
Dominique Hubert and Hill own the second and third-fastest times in the 100-meter dash with times of 10.44 and 10.45 seconds, respectively. Hill also has the second-best long jump in the nation with a leap of 7.68 meters.
Eric Frawley has the second-best pole vault with a mark of 4.95 meters.
