The Grand Canyon University lacrosse team is set to open Southwestern Lacrosse Conference postseason play this Saturday when UC San Diego visits GCU Field in Phoenix, Ariz. Game time is 7 p.m.
The Antelopes enter the conference tournament as the No. 2 seed from the Pacific Division with an overall record of 11-1. UCSD earned the No. 3 seed from the Western Division and carry a 5-9 overall mark. The winner will advance to the conference semifinals on May 5 at Westview High School in San Diego, Calif. for a match-up with the West’s No. 1 seed Biola. The finals will be played on May 6, also at Westview HS.
Grand Canyon has had a breakout season that includes the most wins in school history and a current ranking of No. 7 in MCLA D-II. The ‘Lopes have defeated three D-I schools during the season (Arizona, Northeastern and UNLV).
“We put a lot of pressure on our guys early on because we thought we had the talent to play in the postseason,” said head coach Manny Rapkin. “The guys responded and now have an opportunity to do something special that has never been done in this lacrosse program before.”
Carson Barton has led the way offensively for the Antelopes this season. He had tallied 39 goals this season, 16
th in all of D-II. Barton has also added 21 assists and 33 ground balls.
Chris McWilliams has scored 17 goals for the GCU, second on the team. He is followed by 
Matt Mountain (15) and 
Cody Wagner(13).
Andrew Hunter has once again led the Antelopes in goal. He has recorded 121 saves for a .669 save percentage. His save percentage ranks 13
th in D-II.
UCSD will arrive in Phoenix having lost five of their last six games. The streak has not been indicative of their play on the field with their five losses coming by a combined total of only 14 goals (2.8 avg.). Freshman Blake Ferraro leads the Toreros with 23 goals and 14 assists this season.
“UCSD runs a 3-3 zone and has some dangerous players,” added Rapkin. “We had better be ready as we expect their best performance to date this Saturday.”
