The Grand Canyon University men’s and women’s tennis teams have earned bids to the NCAA Championships, as announced on NCAA.com this evening.
“I'm really proud of both teams for making it to postseason play,” said head coach Greg Prudhomme. “They worked hard and were coachable throughout the season. It’s not easy in the West with only two spots open on the men's side and three on the women's, but we put both teams through.”
The men, ranked No. 17 in D-II, finished the regular season with a record of 11-7 and advance to the Round of 16 that will be contested from May 16-19 at the Top Gun Tennis Academy in Louisville, Ky. GCU will play the winner of the East Region #1 bracket. That bracket features top-seed and No. 7 in the nation, Concordia (NY).
Hawai’i Pacific received the other bid from the West Region.
The Antelopes boast a men’s squad that is led by
Frederic Schoelzel, ranked No. 26 in D-II and No.2 in the West Region. Schoelzel teams with the West’s No. 9 player,
Stephane Murray, to form the 19
th-ranked doubles team in the nation.
Other regionally-ranked men’s players include
Patrice Giraldi (13) and
Peter Kazianschuetz (17). The two also represent the ninth-ranked doubles team in the region.
The 13
th-ranked women will see a familiar foe in fifth-ranked Hawai’i Pacific when they travel to the island of Oahu for their opening-round match with Sea Warriors on April 29. The winner will advance to the Round of 16, which like the men; will be contested in Louisville, Ky. from May 16-19.
GCU and HPU have met twice this season, with the Sea Warriors winning 7-2 on April 13 in Las Vegas, Nev. and 5-0 on April 20 at the PacWest Championships in Belmont, Calif.
The women are led by
Priscilla Annoual who has gone 17-4 this season. She is ranked No. 32 in D-II and No. 7 in the West Region.
Katharina Mittag will enter the match ranked No. 36 in the nation in the nation and No. 10 in the West Region.
Justine Majan holds down the region’s No. 17 ranking.
On the doubles side, Mittag and
Frederique Van de Velde will lead the doubles efforts. The two are ranked No. 21 in D-II and No. 5 in the region and have posted a 12-9 record this season.
“Even though it seemed like a daunting task a few short years ago when we started the program, I felt strongly that we could get here soon,” added Prudhomme. “I feel the same way about a national championship. It is a lofty goal, but I feel like going from where we are now to winning a championship isn't much different than what we already did - starting from nowhere and rising to the top-10 and 15 in the country. I'm happy for both teams, especially for the men with our four seniors. Both teams are working hard to be ready for the tough competition ahead.”
