The Grand Canyon University men’s golf team finished second of 19 teams at the Cal State San Bernardino Coyote Intercollegiate Classic with a three-round 864 total in San Bernardino, Calif.
The Antelopes were second after round one of the tournament and the second round was delayed due to weather conditions, resulting in a 291 first-round score and a 293 in the second. Grand Canyon came out today ready to battle back, shooting an even-par 280 in the third round to hold the runner-up spot.
Chico State was the team title winner with an impressive five-over par 845 despite challenging weather conditions. Chico State’s Kyle Souza was the individual medalist with a five-under par 205. UC San Diego came in a close third, just four strokes behind GCU with an 868 tournament total.
Brandon Moore shot a third-round 69 to finish with a 214 three-round total. Round scores of 73-71-69 were good enough to place Moore in a tie for seventh-place individually.
Sophomore Sam Whitehead and senior Tyler Wooldridge tied for tenth overall after both carded 216 total. Whitehead shot a team-low 68, third lowest round score of the tournament, in the final round of the Coyote Intercollegiate Classic.
Junior Ryan Mahoney tied for 27th overall with a 220 and Marcus Synegal tied for 37th with his 224.
The ‘Lopes are back in action March 5-6 at the Pioneer Shootout in Vallejo, Calif.
