The Grand Canyon University men’s golf team opens the 2012 season Feb. 27-28 at Cal State San Bernardino’s Coyote Intercollegiate Classic in San Bernardino, Calif. at the Arrowhead Country Club.
The Antelopes head into the spring season ranked No.23 in the Golf World/Nike Golf Division II College Coaches Poll.
Grand Canyon had a slow start to the fall season but rallied back to finish second as a team in their final two tournaments.
“We had a rough start to the season but we finished strong,” said head coach Paul Purtzer. “We had two runner-up finishes, finishing second to some really good teams.”
GCU was led by sophomores Mark Geddes and Sam Whitehead, as well as junior Ryan Mahoney during the fall season. Coach Purtzer looks to them to remain consistent and help lead the team this spring. One thing the team has that they didn’t last year is team depth.
“We have a couple of guys who continue to do well but we have others who work their way into the top five each week.”
After finishing 11th at last year’s NCAA Division II Super West Regional, GCU is looking to get a qualifying spot.
“If we want to finish in the top five at regionals we really need to step-up and play better than we did in the fall. We play in a strong region and we have to be better.”
The spring season opener will be a challenge, featuring many nationally ranked competitors. The three-round tournament will begin with two rounds on Monday and conclude with the final round on Tuesday at the Arrowhead Country Club in San Bernardino, Calif.
“Our goal right now is to focus on one tournament at a time, winning step by step.”
