The Grand Canyon University lacrosse team improved their record to 3-0 today, defeating the University of Arizona 10-7, at Murphy Field in Tucson, Ariz.
The game was a tiebreaker of sorts as the two squads had split a pair of exhibition games earlier this season.
Arizona, a member of the MCLA D-I, controlled the play early on, jumping out to 2-0 and 4-1 leads.
Jacob Hippensteel closed the margin to 4-2, scoring a goal on an assist from Brandon Murphy just before the halftime break.
Hippensteel and Luciano DeDonatis each scored to open the third, knotting the game at 4. Chris McWilliams and Kris Holland added assists on the goals.
The Wildcats closed out the third with a pair of goals to take a 6-4 lead.
Kyle Bailey’s goal to begin the fourth keyed a six-goal outburst from the ‘Lopes. Matt Mountain followed Baily with a goal off a broken play, assisted by McWilliams. Three minutes later goalie Andrew Hunter carried the ball over the midline and buried a shot from the right corner from about 15 yards to put the Antelopes up by two. Cody Wagner scored unassisted off of a dodge and Christian Abbott capped the scoring with a transition goal to make the lead 10-6.
Hunter finished the game with 15 saves, while Fred Whistle was 11-for-21 on face-offs.
Grand Canyon will play their regular season home opener on March 8, when they will host Northeastern. The game will be played at the Reach 11 Sports Complex, beginning at 1 p.m.
