The Grand Canyon University lacrosse team opened their first season in the Men’s Collegiate Lacrosse Association with a 12-8 win over Western Washington this afternoon at the Russell Road Recreational Complex in Henderson, Nev.
Carson Barton led the Antelopes with five goals, while Matt Mountain tallied four.
The game was close early as the two teams were tied 3-3 after one and 5-5 at the break. GCU outscored the Vikings 3-0 in the third to pace them to victory.
Geoff Barnes, Jacob Hippensteel and Freddie Matori each had a goal. Mountain, Sackett Keesen, Barton, Cody Wagner, Hippensteel and Luciano DeDonatis had assists.
Andrew Hunter made 13 saves in goal to record the win.
Kris Holland had five ground balls, while teammate Fred Whistle was 13-for-21 on face-offs.
The ‘Lopes will return to the field tomorrow in Henderson where they will face Western Oregon. WOU comes into the game with a 1-2 overall record.
