Senior forward
Saeed Robinson has been named 2012 Daktronics Men’s Soccer West Region Player of the Year, which also places him on the All-West Region First Team for the second straight year. Additionally, sophomore goalkeeper
Joshua Zehring garnered All-West Region Second Team honors.
The Antelopes made it to this year’s NCAA Division II Men’s Soccer Sweet 16 before dropping a 2-1 contest to second-ranked Simon Fraser. GCU was ranked in the top-25 for the entire season and posted a 15-3-2 overall record. The 'Lopes also won their fifth Pacific West Conference crown in the past seven seasons.
“Saeed without a doubt impacted our program,” said head coach Petar Draksin. “He scored a tremendous amount of goals. Scoring 18 goals at any level is not easy. Saeed led us to winning the conference for the fifth time in seven seasons and he put us in the Sweet 16. We were unlucky not to be there last year. He definitely impacted our program on the field, in the classroom and in the community. We, as a staff, are striving to continue to bring that caliber of person into our program.”
Robinson, who was recently named Pacific West Conference Player of the Year, led the conference and the West Region with 18 goals and finished his senior campaign with 42 points. Following the regular season, he also ranked tied for fourth nationally with 2.35 points per game and fifth with 1.00 goal per game. Robinson was selected as the 2012 PacWest Preseason Player of the Year after being named Newcomer of the Year last season.
Zehring recently earned Second Team accolades for goalkeepers in the PacWest Conference. Zehring, in his first season as the starting goalkeeper, started each of GCU’s games this season. Among conference leaders following the regular season, he ranked tied for first in shutouts (5), third in goals against average (0.87) and save percentage (.773) and tied for fourth with 0.28 shutouts per game. Zehring finished with 59 saves on the season and posted a 0.98 goals against average.
“Josh earned this,” added Draksin. “He just as easy could have been a First Team selection. I am excited for him because it is a tremendous honor. He put in the work on the field and in the classroom. Josh is the true example of what can happen if you work hard in the offseason and prepare yourself. Congratulations to Josh and we will hear more about him in the future.”
