The 13
th-ranked Grand Canyon University men’s soccer team defeated Dixie State in overtime, 3-2, today in St. George, Utah. With the win, the ‘Lopes improved to 12-2-0 overall and 9-1-0 in the Pacific West Conference, while the Red Storm fell to 5-7-2 overall and 4-4-2 in conference play.
The win was the eighth straight for GCU, who also handed Dixie State just their second home loss of the season. The win streak is their longest since also winning eight consecutive games from Sept. 6-Oct. 4, 2010.
“Overall, as a team, everyone understands that other teams will play their hardest against us,” said head coach Petar Draksin. “We love to be ranked but we also know that we have a target on our backs.”
Saeed Robinson recorded his first hat trick of the season and third of his career at GCU as he was all of the offense that the ‘Lopes would need in the game.
“We had some great opportunities to score tonight,” added Draksin. “Especially Saeed, he had some good looks and probably could have had a couple more goals. But their goalkeeper made some great saves. Saeed had a very good game for us tonight.”
The ‘Lopes were outshot by the Red Storm, 13-12, as both teams were even with nine shots on goal.
It took GCU less than one minute to get on the board, as Robinson found the back of the net on an assist from
Alex Connally just 41 seconds into the match.
Robinson cushioned the lead for the ‘Lopes after once again successfully converting a shot in the 22
nd minute.
Brandon Hansen assisted on the goal.
The Red Storm cut GCU’s lead in half when Eric Shallenberger was awarded a penalty kick in the 78
th minute. The goal was the first allowed by the ‘Lopes in their past three games.
Just one minute later, Dixie State notched the score at two with a goal off the foot of Garrett Garcia. That goal would prove to hold for the remainder of the half, forcing the contest into extra minutes.
Robinson scored the game-winning goal just over one minute into the first overtime on Connally’s second assist of the game. The goal was Robinson’s team-leading 12
th score of the season and was the lone shot taken in overtime minutes.
“I am very proud of the young men,” said Draksin. “A win is a win. Sometimes it is difficult to come up here to play, but to their credit, Dixie State played their hearts out. They scored two quick goals to get themselves back in the game. But I think our guys responded very well.”
The ‘Lopes will now return home for one game against Dixie State on Saturday at 5:45 p.m. on the GCU Soccer Field before hitting the road for two contests in Southern California next week.
