Grand Canyon University senior midfielder
Mitchell Garcia (Avondale, AZ, Agua Fria, Phoenix College) has been named Pacific West Conference Men's Soccer Player of the Week.
The recognition, for games played Aug. 20-Sept. 4, was announced today by the PacWest Media Office in Phoenix.
Garcia scored three points on a goal and an assist in the Antelopes' undefeated first week of the regular season. He scored the game-winner in a 3-0 win over Colorado State-Pueblo on Sept. 2 and assisted on the first goal in a 2-1 double-overtime victory over Cal Poly Pomona on Sept. 4.
GCU (2-0-0) is ranked No. 9 in the nation and No. 1 in the West Region in this week's National Soccer Coaches Association of America poll.
Two other 'Lopes have been named to the PacWest Men's Soccer Weekly Honor Roll.
Senior goalkeeper
Adam Garcia (Avondale, AZ, Westview, Phoenix College, Gardner-Webb University), no relation to Mitchell Garcia, posted a 2-0 record, allowing one goal in 190:36 of action. He had a 0.47 goals-against average and an .833 save percentage, and made five saves during the week.
Senior defender
Nick Sykes (Boise, ID, Mountain View) scored the game-winning goal on a penalty kick in the double-overtime defeat of Cal Poly Pomona.
