GCU Begins Season at Viking Invitational

The Grand Canyon University men’s golf team will open the 2011-12 season with back-to-back tournaments this weekend in Washington starting with the Viking Invitational in Bellingham hosted by No.8 Western Washington University Sept. 23-24.
Currently ranked 25th in the NCAA Division II, GCU is looking to build off the 2010-11 season. Head coach Paul Purtzer is entering his second season for the ‘Lopes and has brought in a strong recruiting class that includes PING All-Americans Marcus Synegal and Brandon Moore, and NJCAA All-American Ryan Mahoney.
Grand Canyon returns key player Mark Geddes who was named to the 2011 Pacific West Conference First Team and the GCAA/PING All-West Region Team. Geddes was just shy of qualifying for nationals as an individual, losing in a playoff at the Central/West Region Tournament and placing seventh overall with a one-under par 215.
As a team, the ‘Lopes carded six top-five finishes including a team title at the Grand Canyon University Thunderbirds Invitational. The season ended with an 11th-place finish at the Central/West Region Tournament in New Mexico.
The Viking Invitational will begin with a shotgun start at 9 a.m. on Friday morning at the Bellingham Golf and Country Club in Bellingham, Wash.
