The Grand Canyon University men's soccer team defeated Colorado State University-Pueblo, 3-0, in its season opener tonight in front of a crowd of about 500 at the GCU Soccer Field in Phoenix.
Two of the Antelopes' goals were scored by junior transfers from Western Texas College -- defender
Oshane Brown (Kingston, Jamaica, Jamaica College, Western Texas College) and forward
Saeed Robinson (Portmore, Jamaica, Wolmers Boys School, Western Texas College).
Brown's goal came in the 77th minute off of a perfectly-placed ball in the right side of the box from senior
Tony Valera (Phoenix, AZ, Raymond S. Kellis, Phoenix College). It gave GCU a 2-0 lead.
Robinson's goal, in the 83rd minute, was unassisted, He dribbled all the way into the box from the left side, crossed through it, and then turned and shot the ball into the left side of the net.
The 'Lopes' first goal, the game-winner, was scored by senior
Mitchell Garcia (Avondale, AZ, Agua Fria, Phoenix College) on a free kick from the right side, parallel to the top of the 18-yard box.
"It was a great win for us to open the season," GCU Head Coach Petar Draksin said. "You've got to give props to Mitch Garcia, Saeed Robinson and Oshane Brown."
GCU had a whopping 21-5 advantage in shots in the game, as well as a 5-2 edge in corner kicks (four in the first half).
Both teams were whistled for seven fouls.
The 'Lopes' new goalkeeper, senior
Adam Garcia (Avondale, AZ, Westview, Phoenix College, Gardner-Webb University), made two saves and earned the win in his first regular-season game in purple, black and white.
GCU's next game is against Cal Poly Pomona, which beat Dixie State 3-2 in a neutral-site game earlier tonight at the GCU Soccer Field. Kickoff is at 8:15 p.m. at the GCU Soccer Field.
The 'Lopes are predicted to win their fifth Pacific West Conference championship in the six-year history of men's soccer in the conference, and three GCU players, including Garcia, have been named to the 2011 Preseason All-PacWest Men's Soccer Team.
GCU finished last season ranked No. 11 in the nation and No. 2 in the West Region in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America poll and No. 2 in the region in the official NCAA vote. They had a record of 15-3-2 overall, 12-1-1 in the PacWest.
CSU-Pueblo is picked to finish sixth in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference after finishing a subpar 7-11-1 in 2010. The ThunderWolves are very young this year, returning just five seniors.
