The Grand Canyon University men's soccer team is predicted to win its fifth Pacific West Conference championship in the six-year history of men's soccer in the conference and three GCU players have been named to the 2011 Preseason All-PacWest Men's Soccer Team.
The PacWest and KQCKLive teamed up to broadcast the 2011 PacWest Soccer Media Day tonight from San Tan Valley, Ariz. The PacWest unveiled its 2011 Preseason All-Conference Team along with the predicted order of finish during the program, and live interviews were conducted with each head coach, including GCU's Petar Draksin.
Senior defender
Nick Sykes (Boise, ID, Mountain View) and senior midfielders
Mitchell Garcia (Avondale, AZ, Agua Fria, Phoenix College) and
Cordero Young (Orlando, FL, Central Florida Christian Academy, Tyler Junior College) made the Preseason All-PacWest Team.
Sykes was one of six GCU players -- more than any other school -- selected to the NSCAA/Performance Subaru Men's NCAA Division II All-West Region teams last season. A Second Team pick, he received Honorable Mention All-PacWest acclaim in 2008 and 2009. He started all 18 games last year and was a cornerstone of a defense that had the league's second-lowest goals-against average and second-most shutouts.
Garcia, a Third-Team All-West Region pick last season, tied for second in the PacWest in assists (7)
and assists per game (0.39). He started all 18 games and had three goals, one of which was a game-winner.
Young, also a Third-Team selection, tied for fourth in the league in goals (8) and goals per game (0.44), and was seventh in points (19) and points per game (1.06). He started 17 of 18 games played and had three assists. Three of his goals were game-winners.
The Antelopes finished the 2010 season ranked No. 11 in the nation and No. 2 in the West Region in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America poll and No. 2 in the region in the official NCAA vote. They finished the season with a record of 15-3-2 overall, 12-1-1 in the PacWest.
The 15 wins are the third most in an individual season in school history. The record is 17, set by the 1998 and 1999 squads.
The 'Lopes advanced to the Sweet 16 by beating Cal State San Bernardino, winner of the California Collegiate Athletic Conference's South Division, 4-1 on Nov. 10 in Chico.
The last time GCU was in a regional final was 1998, when it lost 2-1 to Seattle Pacific in triple overtime in the NCAA Division II West Region Final. The last time it won a regional final was in 1996, when it beat Seattle Pacific 2-1 in triple overtime at GCU. The 'Lopes went on to win the NCAA Division II national championship that season.
GCU made the postseason for the 10th time in the 25-year history of the men's soccer program and the fourth time since 2000. Its most recent appearance was in 2007.
Draksin was named 2010 NSCAA/Mondo Far West Region Coach of the Year. Voting for the recognition was done by coaches who belong to the NSCAA, an organization that was founded in 1941 and has more than 30,000 members.
It was the second time Draksin has been named Far West Region Coach of the Year by the NSCAA. He won the award in 1996, when he also was selected NSCAA/Umbro NCAA Division II Coach of the Year.
Draksin has been the head coach of GCU's men's soccer program since 1993 and has compiled 178 wins. His teams have advanced to the NCAA Division II Men's Soccer Championship five times. He has guided the 'Lopes to five straight winning seasons and 12 winning seasons overall. He has coached 10 All-Americans and 24 players who have gone to the professional level, as well as six conference championships and the only NCAA national championship in GCU history for any sport.
The 'Lopes kick off the 2011 season against CSU-Pueblo at 8:15 p.m. on Friday at the GCU Soccer Field.
