The Grand Canyon University men's soccer team has signed Ben Hamlett, the 2010 Kentucky Intercollegiate Athletic Conference leader in points (32), points per game (1.78) and game-winning goals per game (0.17), to a National Letter of Intent.
Hamlett was a freshman at Mountain State University in Beckley, W.V. last year, so he will be a sophomore when he enrolls at GCU this fall and will have three years of eligibility remaining.
In addition to leading the KIAC in the aforementioned categories, the 5-foot-10, 169-pound Hamlett placed second in goals (13), goals per game (0.72), assists per game (0.33) and game-winning goals (3), and tied for second in assists (6). He was named KIAC Player of the Week for games played Sept. 13-19 after having three goals and seven points in a tie against Union and a win over Virginia Intermont College. He was named First-Team All-KIAC.
He came to MSU from his hometown of Hobart, Tasmania, Australia, where he attended Rosny College. In 2009, his team, Clarence United, won the state championship in the Senior Men's Tasmanian Premier League and the Milan Laekoseljac Knockout Competition statewide trophy.
In 2010, also with Clarence United, he was named Most Valuable Player, Player's Player, and Club Best and Fairest, and was the leading scorer with 15 goals. He represented Tasmania in the Tasmanian Senior Men's All-State competition.
"Ben brings passion for the game and a high work ethic to our program," GCU Head Coach Petar Draksin said. "Obviously he had some nice stats at Mountain State and he had some accomplishments. We're excited about those things. That being said, Ben knows that he's coming to a new program and he has to get it done here.
"Besides Ben's soccer ability, he's also an excellent student. He's committed to his studies, and plans to major in sports management at GCU. His natural position is forward, but he also can play in the midfield areas as an outside midfielder of a central midfielder. It's always nice to have players who can play multiple positions. Our focus is to have Ben play forward and continue with our program what he did at Mountain State."
