The Grand Canyon University women's tennis team rebounded from their semifinal defeat yesterday to defeat Chaminade 5-0 today, claiming third place at the Pacific West Conference Championships in Laie, Hawai’i.
"The girls did a tremendous job today," said head coach Greg Prudhomme. "It's great to have a good team and to have accomplished many things during the season, but it is extra special when the entire team can play their best when it counts the most. The last time we played Chaminade, they won two of the three doubles matches against us, so it was great to see our ladies raise their level of play today. We were winning in three of the remaining four matches when play was stopped."
The Antelopes, ranked No. 15 in the nation and No. 3 in the west region, will now wait to see if their impressive body of work will gain them a bid to the NCAA tourney. The top three teams in the west region receive bids.
After being swept in doubles their first two matches of the Championships, the Antelopes returned the favor, sweeping the Silverswords 3-0.
Vanlerenberghe continued her banner day of work, winning the No. 5 singles match 6-1, 6-0.
Chloe Cornille wrapped up third place for GCU, dominating the No. 6 singles match with a 6-0, 6-1 win.
All other singles matches remained unfinished due to tournament rules.
Grand Canyon closes out the regular season and PacWest Championships with a 16-4 dual record.
