The Grand Canyon University women’s tennis team opens the Pacific West Conference tournament today with a match against Hawai’i Hilo.
“The girls are really excited to compete hard at the PacWest tourney,” said head coach Greg Prudhomme. “They know what is at stake and are prepared to fight for their highest seeding in the tournament at No. 3 in many years.”
The Antelopes, ranked No. 15 nationally and No. 3 in the west region, enter the Championships seeded third and are coming off a regular season where they finished 14-3.
GCU defeated the Vulcans, 8-1, when the two met on Feb. 9 in Glendale, Ariz. Hawai’i Hilo is seeded sixth in the tourney and No. 10 in the west region poll.
Grand Canyon is led by Katharina Mittag. She is ranked sixth in Division II and has a record of 9-4. Mittag has joined with Stephanie Haldeman to post a 12-1 record in doubles, winning their last 10 straight matches.
The PacWest Championships will run from today through Saturday and will be hosted by BYU-Hawai’i in Laie, Hawai’i.
