The Grand Canyon University women’s tennis team advanced to the Pacific West Conference Semifinals with a dramatic 5-3 come-from-behind win over Hawai’i Hilo in Laie, Hi today.
The Antelopes are seeded third in the tournament, while the Vulcans are seeded sixth. GCU will play No. 2 Hawai’i Pacific in a match that is scheduled to start at 4 p.m. on Friday, April 15 (AZ time). The Vulcans fall into the consolation bracket and will face No. 7 Dixie State.
“We just played one of the most dramatic matches of the season!” said head coach Greg Prudhomme. “We had our backs against the wall when Hawai’i Hilo came out playing great doubles and jumping to a 3-0 lead. I am so proud of the girls for keeping their fight and attitude after falling so far behind. They came through with flying colors as they swept the first five singles that completed while at No. 1, Katharina Mittag came back and won the 2nd set in a tiebreaker after dropping the opening set. We are very excited for reaching the semifinals of the Pacific West Conference tourney for the first time in many years.”
The Vulcans opened the match strong, winning all three of the doubles matches to jump out to a 3-0 lead.
GCU rebounded to sweep the singles matches and advance in the tourney.
This was the second meeting between the two teams this season, with GCU winning, 8-1, on Feb. 9 in Glendale, Ariz.
GCU faced Hawai’i Pacific on Feb. 11 in Glendale, losing 6-3.
