TUCSON — The Grand Canyon women's tennis team challenged Arizona on Sunday in a 4-3 loss, the same score the Wildcats had in wins against top-30 teams Central Florida and Houston.
After GCU earned the doubles point at Arizona's LaNelle Robson Tennis Center, the Wildcats rallied to take four of six singles court for its third 4-3 home win of the weekend.
Â
Lopes sophomore
Bella Crossman and senior Dani Deaifi got the doubles success started, winning 6-4 on Court 2.
Â
The GCU freshman duo of
Hams Metwally and Amalia Suciu then clinched the doubles point for the Lopes with a 6-3 win.
Â
The Wildcats took three quick singles points with victories on Courts 6, 4, and 5, leaving them within one point of clinching the dual match.
Â
However, GCU sophomore
Karina Hofbauer turned the tide with the Lopes' first singles win on Court 2. Hofbauer defeated Arizona' Josie Usereau 0-6, 6-3, 6-2.
Â
Metwally, who has been red hot in singles, earned the second point for GCU on Court 3, taking both of her sets in tiebreakers. With this match-evening victory, Metwally has won five singles matches in a row.
Â
After a hard-fought battle and comeback, GCU got one last fight from Crossman in the final match when she rallied to a second-set win. Arizona's Martyna Ostrzygalo prevailed  6-4, 5-7, 6-4 to secure the dual match for the Wildcats.
Â
The Lopes look forward to this weekend, when they have home matches against San José State on Friday and Fresno State on Sunday.
