The GCU Women's Tennis Team headed to Tucson yesterday to take on the Wildcats of the University of Arizona.
After the Wildcats knocked off a top 30 ranked Houston team, the Lopes were ready to take on their in-state foe. After earning the doubles point the Lopes fell in a tight battle that ended 4-3.
Sophomore
Bella Crossman and senior Dani Deaifi got the scoring started for the Lopes winning on Court 2 6-4.
The freshman duo of
Hams Metwally and Amalia Suciu then clinched the doubles point for the Lopes winning 6-3.
The Wildcats took two quick singles points with victories on Courts 6, 4, and 5 leaving them within one point of clinching the match.
Sophomore
Karina Hofbauer however, turned the tide for GCU as she accomplished the first singles win for the Lopes on Court 2. Hofbauer defeated Josie Usereau 0-6, 6-3, 6-2.
Metwally, who has been red hot in singles, earned the second point for GCU on Court 3 winning both of her matches in tiebreakers. With this win Metwally has won five in a row in singles.
After a hard fought battle and comeback, Martyna Ostrzygalo from the Wildcats defeated Crossman 6-4, 5-7, 6-4 securing the match for the Wildcats.
The Lopes look forward to this week where they have a home match on Friday against San José State and then play Fresno State on Sunday.
