The No. 15 Grand Canyon University women’s tennis team fell to No. 2 BYU-Hawai’i, 8-1, this afternoon in Laie, Hawai’i.
It was the final regular season match for both schools. GCU completes the regular season with a 14-3 record.
“The girls played a good match today and received great preparation going into the conference tournament tomorrow,” said head coach Greg Prudhomme. “Anytime you get an opportunity to play the best team in the country it’s a good thing, especially when we can earn another highlight. Chloe Cornille played one of her best matches of the year winning her singles match in the 3rd set tie-breaker, giving us the first singles win over BYU in my four years of coaching the women at GCU. Even though it was a loss, this match gave us good momentum to bring into the next three days.”
Chloe Cornille took the No. 6 singles match, winning the third-set tiebreak after losing the first set of the match. Cornille improved her overall record to 14-3 this season.
The Antelopes will now turn their attention to the Pacific West Conference Championships which begins tomorrow in Laie. The ‘Lopes earned the third seed in the tourney and will face sixth seed Hawai’i Hilo at 4 p.m. (AZ time). GCU knocked off the Vulcans, 8-1, in their opening match of the season in Glendale, Ariz. on Feb. 9.
