The Grand Canyon University lacrosse team fell 12-11 in overtime to Dominican in Orinda, Calif. this afternoon.
The loss drops the Antelopes to 2-6 overall and 2-2 in the Western Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association. Dominican improved to 3-5 overall and 3-0 in the WILA.
GCU trailed 11-9 in the fourth period, but unassisted goals by
Josh Drummond at 12:47 and 1:33 sent the game into overtime. Drummond finished the game with six goals on eight shots and an assist and two ground balls to lead the ‘Lopes.
Dominican would control the face-off in overtime and hold the ball offensively until scoring the game winner with 2:32 remaining.
The game was tight throughout featuring five lead changes, with no team holding more than a three goal lead.
After falling behind 2-0 in the first, GCU scored three goals in just over four minutes to take their first lead of the game at 3-2.
Dominican held a 5-4 lead at the half and scored the first two goals of the third to open their biggest lead of the game, 7-4.
Drummond would score back-to-back goals to close the gap to 7-6 and would later team with
Konner Klein on back-to-back tallies to tie the score at 8-8.
Andrew Hunter made 19 saves in the game, with seven coming in the opening frame.
GCU was outshot 48-29 and narrowly lost the ground ball battle, 26-24.
Grand Canyon returns to action tomorrow when they will face Notre Dame de Namur at 1:00 p.m. in Belmont, Calif.
