The Grand Canyon University lacrosse team defeated Adams State, 10-8, tonight at GCU Field in Phoenix.
The win improves the Antelopes to 2-1 in the Western Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association, a half-game behind first-place Notre Dame de Namur. Adams State fell to 0-3 in conference play. GCU’s win improves their overall record to 2-5.
After the teams opened with a scoreless nine minutes to begin the game, the Antelopes offense would come alive to score three goals and take a 3-0 lead after one period.
Josh Drummond, who finished the game with three goals and an assist, opened the scoring with a goal from
Kyle Mason with 5:35 remaining in the first period.
Jacob Hippensteel increased the lead to 2-0 with an unassisted goal 45 seconds later. Konner Klein completed the scoring with a goal from
Kahai Sibley with 2:27 left.
GCU would extend the lead to 5-1 going into the half on a pair of goals by Hippensteel.
Chris Cunningham scored three third period goals for Adams State to cut the lead to 6-4 after three periods.
Grand Canyon came out of the third period break with four goals to begin the fourth, highlighted by Hippensteel’s fourth goal of the game and two goals from Drummond to go up 10-4.
Adams State would rally to score four goals late to complete the scoring.
Andrew Hunter was once again dominant in goal, with 23 saves on 49 shots. Hunter also showed himself on offense, turning many clears into Antelope goals.
Grand Canyon is off until a trip to California for two conference games against Dominican on March 26 in San Rafael and Notre Dame de Namur on March 27 in Belmont.
