'Lopes Open 2011 Season Fifth After First Round

The Grand Canyon University women’s golf team opened the 2011 season today at Northern Arizona University’s Red Rocks Invitational in Sedona placing fifth after the first round.
Due to weather concerns in Sedona, the tournament was forced to start a day early instead of the schedule Saturday shotgun start.
Northern Arizona is in the lead with a 304, 16 over par. The ‘Lopes finished round one with a team score 321, 33 over.
The individual leader for Grand Canyon is junior Brittany Penny (Peoria, AZ, Centennial (Winthrop University)) who is currently tied for 12th with a 78, six over par.
GCU is the single participating institution from the division II level while the remaining 17 institutions compete at the division I level. Grand Canyon finished the 2010 fall season ranked fourth in the west region according to the National Golf Coaches Association and ninth in the nation by the Golfstat NCAA women’s division II head-to-head rankings.
Tournament play will continue tomorrow, Saturday, Feb. 26 with a shotgun start at 1 pm.
