The University of New Mexico has gone to the NCAA Division I Men's Soccer Championship tournament eight of the past 10 seasons. Its head coach, Jeremy Fishbein, has won seven conference championships, owns a .750 winning percentage in Division I and was named National Coach of the Year by
Soccer America in 2004.
He spent nine seasons at the Division II level before joining the Lobos program in 2001. He was the head coach at Fort Lewis from 1992-98, during which time his teams won four conference championships and competed against Grand Canyon University and its ultra-successful head coach, Petar Draksin. He and Draksin are good friends, having known each other since the early 1990s when Fishbein was an assistant coach at Fort Lewis.
At
7 p.m. on Saturday, March 12, the two will be reunited for a spring game at the GCU Soccer Field.
It will be a great test for the Antelopes, who last season captured the Pacific West Conference title for the fourth time in the five-year history of men's soccer in the conference. They were ranked No. 11 in the nation and No. 2 in the West Region in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America poll and No. 2 in the region in the official NCAA vote.
"We are excited to kick off the spring season with the first game being played on our campus against a Division-I, nationally-prominent program," Draksin said. "It's big for our players, it's big for our community to see a Division-I level of soccer to be played in our own back yard. This is what we're striving for, to someday be a Division I program, so we might as well start playing as many possible Division-I programs, even if it's a scrimmage.
"But, as we know, in the game of soccer there's no such thing as a scrimmage. Every game is approached with a highly competitive edge. Hopefully it will be a nice evening and we'll get a good crowd to see some high-quality soccer."
This will be the first chance for Antelopes fans to see new recruit Alex Connally, a central midfielder from England who joined the team in January after transferring from Erskine College in South Carolina.
