The Grand Canyon University men's soccer team has moved up one spot to No. 4 in the West Region in both the official NCAA and National Soccer Coaches Association of America NCAA Division II polls this week.
The NCAA poll was released today and the NSCAA vote came out yesterday.
The Antelopes (12-4-1 overall, 8-2-1 in the PacWest) lost a key Pacific West Conference match to California Baptist on Saturday in their regular-season home finale, but still could win at least a share of the conference title if they beat Dixie State tomorrow, Hawai'i Pacific ties or loses to BYU-Hawai'i today and California Baptist ties of loses to Dixie State on Saturday.
Hawai'i Pacific (13-4-0, 9-2-0 and ranked No. 8 in the West Region in the NSCAA poll) and California Baptist (12-5-0, 9-2-0 and ranked No. 9) currently are tied for first place in the PacWest. GCU is in third place and Dixie State (8-6-2, 7-3-0), which upset the 'Lopes 1-0 on Sept. 17 in Phoenix, is in fourth.
Regardless of whether it claims the conference title for the fifth time in the past six years, GCU could receive an invitation to the NCAA tournamentif it it is in the top four in the West Region in the final regular-season NCAA poll.
"It's always good when you move up in any rankings," said GCU Head Coach Petar Draksin, whose team ranks No. 7 out of 180 schools ranked nationally in scoring offense (2.69 goals per game), No. 8 in team goals-against average (0.61), and No. 12 in total goals (43), won-lost-tied percentage (.781) and save percentage (.831). "The goal of our program is always to be ranked as high as possible regionally and nationally, but we still have work ahead of us."
Simon Fraser (16-0-0 overall), Chico State (12-3-3) and Seattle Pacific (12-3-2) are ahead of the 'Lopes in the regional rankings.
Chico State (11-3-2 in the CCAA) plays Cal State Dominguez Hills (10-4-2) and Cal State L.A. (10-1-5) faces Cal State Stanislaus (9-5-2) on Friday in the California Collegiate Athletic Conference Tournament. Chico State won the North Division and Cal State Stanislaus finished second, while Cal State L.A. captured the South Division crown and Cal State Dominguez Hills (13-4-0) was second..
The PacWest does not have a conference tournament.
Cal State L.A., Cal State Dominguez Hills and Cal State Stanislaus are ranked Nos. 5, 6 and 7 in the NSCAA West Region poll.
Seattle Pacific (6-2-1 in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference) closes out the regular season with a home game against Saint Martin's 4-4-1) on Saturday.
