Kyle Ciliento's
scoreless streak lasted only one game.
The reigning Pacific West Conference Player of the Year and Freshman of the Year, who led the conference with 23 goals and 51 points last season, did not score in the Antelopes' season-opening tie with Montana State Billings on Saturday. Tonight, however, the sophomore forward
(Phoenix, AZ, Pinnacle, Saint Mary's College of California) came back with a vengeance. He scored three goals to lead GCU to a 3-1 win over defending Great Northwest Athletic Conference champion Saint Martin's at the GCU Soccer Field.
The 'Lopes improved to 1-0-1 on the season. The Saints, who finished the 2009 season ranked No. 6 in the final West Region poll, fell to 1-2-0.
Ciliento's first goal came on a penalty kick in the 24th minute.
Fifty-nine seconds later, Saint Martin's Ruben Orozco also scored on a penalty kick after a hand ball was called in the goalie's box.
Thirty-one seconds into the second half, Ciliento made the score 2-1 when he took a nice cross from senior forward
Pat Perkins (Bremerton, WA/Bremerton, Olympic College) and made strong contact with the ball, putting it in the back of the net.
In the 87th minute, he got a beautiful, long ball from senior midfielder/forward
Harvey Martinez (Miami, FL/Coral Gables, Marshalltown CC) and slid as he kicked the ball into the goal.
GCU had a 15-6 advantage in shots in the game, as well as a 5-3 edge in corner kicks.
The 'Lopes' next regular-season game is against Dominican University on Sept. 16 in San Ramon, Calif. Their next home game is on Sept. 30, when they take on BYU Hawaii at 5:45 p.m. at the GCU Soccer Field.
