The Grand Canyon University men's soccer team tied Montana State University Billings, 1-1, in double overtime in tonight's 25th anniversary match at the GCU Soccer Field.
It was the 2010 season opener for both teams.
The Antelopes had a 21-6 advantage in shots, a 3-0 edge in corner kicks and 11 fewer fouls than the Yellowjackets, but a goal by junior midfielder
Mitchell Garcia (Avondale, AZ/Agua Fria, Phoenix College) in the 28th minute was not enough to secure the win in this historic match. It was a beautiful goal by Garcia on a free kick into the upper 90.
In the 53rd minute, Montana State Billings forward Thomas Sheets took a pass out wide and shot the ball. It found the back of the net and knotted the score at 1.
The teams battled back and forth for the remainder of regulation time as well as both overtimes. The Yellowjackets had one shot in the first overtime and the 'Lopes had a 2-1 advantage in shots in the second extra period, but none of them found their way past a keeper and the teams had to settle for a tie.
Nonetheless, it was a great night for the GCU men's soccer program. Kevin McCabe, the host of "The Grand Canyon University Sports Report" on The Fan AM 1060 Thursdays at 11:25 a.m., was the special guest public-address announcer. Brenda Combs gave a rousing rendition of the National Anthem,. Jud Hawken, who played for the 'Lopes in 1990 and '91, recited the prayer that teams have been saying at the 18-yard line before matches for the past 25 years. Hawken was joined by a number of other GCU men's soccer alumni who came out to show their support for, and tremendous pride in, the program and its longtime head coach, Petar Draksin, who led the 'Lopes to the NCAA national championship in 1996.
GCU Executive Chairman of the Board Brent Richardson and Chief Executive Officer Brian Mueller performed the honorary kickoff. An ice cream social preceded the match in the north gym. The GCU cheerleaders and dance team performed at halftime. .A special shout-out went out to the first men's soccer coach at GCU, Peter Duah, who currently is living in Ghana, West Africa.
It was a night to celebrate where the GCU men's soccer program started and what it has become -- a team that has won three of the past four Pacific West Conference championships, the defending PacWest champion, and a program that has even bigger and better things ahead.
