The Grand Canyon University men's soccer team improved its season record to 6-0-1 overall, 5-0-0 in the Pacific West Conference with a 4-0 shutout over BYU-Hawaii tonight at the GCU Soccer Field. Counting the last four games of the 2009 season, the Antelopes now have gone 10 straight games without a loss.
Sophomore forward
Kyle Ciliento (Phoenix, AZ/Pinnacle, Saint Mary's College of California) recorded a hat trick -- his second of the season -- and senior forward
Pat Perkins (Bremerton, WA/Bremerton, Olympic College) added a goal off of an assist from Ciliento.
Senior goalkeeper
Ben Paneccasio (Sydney, Australia/Rosebank College, Tyler Junior College) posted his fifth straight shutout.
Ciliento gave GCU a 1-0 lead in the third minute when he kicked a rebound into the lower-left corner of the net. Junior midfielder
Cordero Young (Orlando, FL/Central Florida Christian Academy, Tyler Junior College) was credited with an assist on the play.
Nine minutes later, Ciliento scored again when he volleyed in a corner kick from junior midfielder
Mitchell Garcia (Avondale, AZ/Agua Fria, Phoenix College).
In the 16th minute, Ciliento beat a defender to the right of the goal and made an easy cross to Perkins, who found the back of the net.
In the 63rd minute, senior midfielder
Harvey Martinez (Miami, FL/Coral Gables, Marshalltown CC) made a cross through defenders. Ciliento was on the back post and put it in.
The 'Lopes had a 16-1 advantage in shots in the game, as well as a 7-1 edge in corner kicks.
The Seasiders fell to 2-4-0, 1-3-0.
"We're glad to be home, to be able to play in front of our families, friends and students at the university," Head Coach Petar Draksin said.
"For the game, we scored three gorgeous goals. The fourth one was a little bit of luck. Two defenders missed the ball and it ended up on Kyle's foot, and he put it away. As far as the game overall, I felt at times BYU had some very good possessions. We didn't do a good enough job of closing them down, specifically in the first half. It got better in the second half organization-wise.
"We've got a stretch-out tomorrow and a meeting to address some things, and we'll get ready for a rematch against BYU-Hawaii on Saturday. Going back to last season, we're looking for our 11th straight win without a loss. We know we have to show up again and play."
