The Grand Canyon University men's soccer team has demonstrated a mastery of the Pacific West Conference and the NCAA Division II West Region thus far in the 2010 season, going 4-0-0 in conference play (first place) and 5-0-1 overall and being ranked No. 8 in the region in last week's National Soccer Coaches Association of America poll.
So it should come as no surprise to anyone who follows the team that the Antelopes, both collectively and individually, are dominating the latest NCAA statistics as well.
GCU is No. 2 out of 177 teams ranked nationally in goals-against average (0.32), No. 5 in shutout percentage (0.67), No. 7 in scoring offense (3.17), No. 8 in won-loss-tied percentage (.917) and No. 13 in save percentage (.857).
Sophomore forward Kyle Ciliento (Phoenix, AZ/Pinnacle, Saint Mary's College of California) is No. 2 in goals per game (1.17), No. 4 in points per game (2.5), No. 6 in total goals (7) and No. 14 in total points (15).
Senior goalkeeper Ben Paneccasio (Sydney, Australia/Rosebank College, Tyler Junior College) is No. 5 in goals-against average (0.321) and No. 12 in save percentage (.857).
Senior midfielder/forward Harvey Martinez (Miami, FL/Coral Gables, Marshalltown CC) is No. 9 in assists per game (0.67) and No. 17 in total assists (4).
Junior midfielder Cordero Young (Orlando, FL/Central Florida Christian Academy, Tyler Junior College) is No. 18 in goals per game (0.83).
GCU plays PacWest foes BYU-Hawaii (2-3 overall, 1-2 PacWest) on Thursday and Saturday and Hawai'i Pacific (4-1, 3-0 and in second place in the conference) next Monday and Wednesday at the GCU Soccer Field. All matches kick off at 5:45 p.m.
Next week's matches will feature two of the country's top scorers, Ciliento and Hawai'i Pacific's Chance Bukoski, the national leader in points per game (3.0) and goals per game (1.2).
