Junior midfielder Cordero Young (Orlando, FL/Central Florida Christian Academy, Tyler Junior College) scored two goals -- he has four in the past two games -- to lead the Grand Canyon University men's soccer team to a 6-0 romp over Academy of Art today at Boxer Stadium in San Francisco.
It was the second Pacific West Conference match for both teams. The Antelopes improved to 3-0-1 overall, 2-0-0 in the PacWest. The Urban Knights fell to 1-4-0, 0-2-0. The 'Lopes won 3-0 at Dominican University of California on Thursday, while the Urban Knights lost 2-0 at home to Dixie State College on Thursday
Sophomore forward Kyle Ciliento (Phoenix, AZ/Pinnacle, Saint Mary's College of California) also scored two goals in today's game, one of them on a penalty kick. The 2009 PacWest Player of the Year and Freshman of the Year has scored five goals in GCU's past three games.
Senior Ben Paneccasio (Sydney, Australia/Rosebank College, Tyler Junior College), last year's PacWest Goalkeeper of the Year and Newcomer of the Year, recorded his second straight shutout (despite having zero saves) and has surrendered just two goals this season.
GCU had an 18-4 advantage in shots in today’s game, as well as an 8-3 edge in corner kicks. Its other goals came from senior forward Pat Perkins (Bremerton, WA/Bremerton, Olympic College) in the 13th minute and senior defender/midfielder Tom Hurdle (North Yorkshire, England/King James) in the 46th minute.
Academy of Art had just four shots in the game, none of them on goal.
“I’m very pleased with the way we’re playing defensively,” Head Coach Petar Draksin said. “We’re unified as a team and playing very, very hard. Chris Green and Nick Sykes have solidified our defense. Offensively, it was great to see Cordero Young step up for us again. For the last four games, teams have been keying on Kyle Ciliento.
“Mitch Garcia has a great assist on our first goal, and Harvey Martinez had a great assist on Kyle’s second goal. We’ve scored nine goals in the first two games on this trip, and the scoring load has been spread around. That’s what good teams do. Hopefully the scoring streak continues on Monday."
The ‘Lopes play PacWest foe Hawai’i Hilo in a neutral-site game at 9 a.m. on Monday hosted by Notre Dame de Namur. They end this trip to the Bay Area with a game against Notre Dame de Namur at 2 p.m. on Wednesday in Belmont, Calif.
GCU and Academy of Art played a hard-fought overtime match at Boxer Stadium last season. Ciliento assisted on the winning goal in that match. This is Academy of Arts' second full season of PacWest play.
