Senior forward
Pat Perkins (Bremerton, WA/Bremerton, Olympic College) scored two goals to lead the Grand Canyon University men's soccer team to a 4-0 win over the University of Hawai'i at Hilo in a neutral-site game this morning in Belmont, Calif.
The Antelopes, ranked No. 10 in the West Region and playing their third game in six days, improved to 4-0-1 overall, 3-0-0 in the Pacific West Conference. The Vulcans fell to 1-3-1, 0-2-1.
Today's game had a 9 a.m. start and was hosted by Notre Dame de Namur University, which GCU plays at 2 p.m. on Wednesday in Belmont to end this eight-day, four-game trip to the Bay Area.
Sophomore forward
Kyle Ciliento (Phoenix, AZ/Pinnacle, Saint Mary's College of California) scored the first goal in today's game in the sixth minute on a free kick from just outside of the box. It was his sixth goal of the season, tying him for the PacWest lead. Last season, he was named the PacWest Player of the Year and Freshman of the Year, as well as First-Team All-PacWest, after leading the conference in goals (23), points (51), game-winning goals (8), points per game (2.55) and goals per game (1.15).
Perkins put the back of the net on another free kick in the 11th minute. Junior midfielder
Mitchell Garcia (Avondale, AZ/Agua Fria, Phoenix College) crossed the ball to Perkins on the free kick.
Perkins scored again in the 67th minute when junior midfielder
Cordero Young (Orlando, FL/Central Florida Christian Academy, Tyler Junior College) shot the ball, it rebounded off the keeper and Perkins kicked it past him.
Freshman forward
Maximilian Kluge (Bremen, Germany/Gymnasium Obervieland) scored the game's final goal in the 71st minute off of an assist from another freshman,
Brendan Enriquez (Phoenix, AZ/Millennium). Enriquez passed over the defense and Kluge scored on a breakaway. It was Kluge's first goal and Enriquez's first assist for GCU.
Senior goalkeeper
Ben Paneccasio (Sydney, Australia/Rosebank College, Tyler Junior College) recorded his third consecutive shutout for the 'Lopes. He made just two saves and has five total saves in the past three games.
Paneccasio was the 2009 PacWest Goalkeeper of the Year and Newcomer of the Year, as well as a First-Team All-PacWest selection.
GCU had an 18-11 advantage in shots in the game, as well as a 3-0 edge in corner kicks.
The Vulcans finished last season 10-10 overall, 9-5 in the PacWest and finished fourth in the conference. They have a new head coach, Bryan Green.
Eight yellow cards were issued in today's game, half of them to GCU.
