The Grand Canyon University men's soccer team is ranked No. 10 in the NCAA Division II West Region poll, released today.
It is the second poll of the season. In the first one, the Antelopes, the defending Pacific West Conference champions and preseason pick to win the conference title again this season, were unranked.
GCU was tied by Montana State Billings, 1-1, in its season opener on Sept. 4. Two days later, the 'Lopes defeated Saint Martin's, the defending Great Northwest Athletic Conference champion, 3-1.
Montana State Billings, which beat Dixie State and Colorado Christian in its past two matches to improve its record to 2-0-1, is ranked No. 8 in this week's poll.
The California Collegiate Athletic Conference dominates the current rankings, holding down the top seven spots in the West Region. Cal State Los Angeles (3-0-0) is No. 1, followed by Cal State Dominguez Hills (3-0-1), Chico State (4-0-0), Cal Poly Pomona (3-1-0), Sonoma State (3-1-0), Cal State San Bernardino (3-1-0) and Cal State Stanislaus (2-0-2). Western Washington (2-1-1) of the GNAC is ranked No. 9.
"The GCU men's soccer team has lost two potential starting players this season," Head Coach Petar Draksin said. "Joshua Ademosu is a senior and was not granted a medical redshirt year. We were counting on him heavily. And Frederic Schoelzel is a junior transfer who started the season opener and fractured his arm in that game. He may miss the rest of the season.
"Despite these two key losses, we are going to keep shooting for the goal that we set for ourselves this season -- finishing in the top four in the West Region rankings and qualifying for the NCAA Tourrnament, as well as being PacWest champions for the fourth time in the past five seasons. We greatly miss these two young men, but it's sports; it is what it is."
GCU's women's soccer team, which was tied for 10th place in the West Region last week, inexplicably fell out of this week's poll. The 'Lopes shut out New Mexico Highlands, 4-0, in their only game since last week's poll was released.
Previously, GCU defeated Saint Martin's in its season opener on Sept. 3 and lost in overtime to Cal State San Bernardino two days later. CSUDH (3-0-0) is ranked No. 2 in this week's poll.
Cal State Los Angeles (2-0-0) is No. 1, Seattle Pacific (3-0-1) is No. 3, UC San Diego (3-1-0) is No. 4, Cal State Stanislaus (3-0-0) is No. 5, Western Washington (2-0-1) is No. 6, Cal State Dominguez Hills (1-1-0) is No. 7, Montana State Billings (2-0-1) is No. 8, fellow PacWest member BYU-Hawaii (1-0-1) is No. 9 and Cal Poly Pomona (3-0-1) is No. 10.
Despite being dominated on the stat sheet, BYU-Hawaii played to a 0-0, double-overtime draw with Seattle Pacific on Sept. 8. SPU is the defending GNAC champion and is picked to repeat this year.
