Former Grand Canyon University men's soccer player Rodolfo "Fito" Collazo, who played for the Antelopes from 2005-08, signed a contract with Alacranes de Durango, a professional team in Liga de Ascenso (formerly known as Primera Division A) on July 7.
Collazo, a 5-foot-11, 170-pound defender from Phoenix, attended both Central and Brophy Prep High Schools and majored in marketing at GCU. He was named Second-Team All-Pacific West Conference in 2006, and First-Team All-PacWest and Second-Team Daktronics All-West Region in 2007.
He played for the U-23 Arizona Sahuaros team that won the West Region title and advanced to the national championships in 2008. He played for the Sahuaros in a U.S. Open Cup game vs. the Major League Soccer-bound Seattle Sounders in June 2008. He also played for the Cisco U-19 state cup champions in 2006.
"For a player without any professional experience to sign in that league is very impressive," said Carols Gomez, a volunteer assistant coach for the GCU men's soccer team who played for the 'Lopes from 2000-02. "I spoke to several coaches in Mexico and was able to get him to do preseason with that team a month ago, with a very good chance of staying. The coaches were very impressed with his performance and signed him.
"Fito was our most consistent player during the four years he played here. Our defense was considered one of the best in the country during those years, thanks in big part to him. When Bosko (Jovicevic) got player of the year for GCU (in 2007), he gave Fito all the credit, because he was the player that did all the dirty work."
Liga de Ascenso is the second professional level of the Mexican football league system. It's a very good league in which players such as Cuahtemoc Blanco of the Mexican national team plays (he plays for Irapuato, one of 18 clubs in the league). The winner of the league tournament is promoted to the Primera Division de Mexico.
"He almost didn't fulfill his dream of playing professional due to the lack of support and opportunities in this city, and it's nice to see that a local kid like him was able to make it," Gomez said. "This is just the beginning, so hopefully he will succeed, I believe he has what it takes."
