Tennis Teams Finish Hawaii Trip On High Note

The GCU tennis teams finished the Hawaii trip with some of their best tennis. We fell short of winning, but the men were one point from splitting the singles matches with a Hawai'i Pacific team that is ranked No. 5 in the country and made it to the NCAA semifinals last season. GCU's No. 5 player, Will Herbert, and No. 6 player, Sebastian Guevara, won their singles matches, while Patrice Giraldi had a match point to win at No. 1 singles. Other close matches were at No. 2 singles, where GCU captain Szymon Gas lost 6-4, 7-5, and at No. 3 singles, where Gas and Guevara were defeated 8-6. It may have been a loss, but last year we were losing these matches 9-0. On the women's side, GCU also came away with an unexpected win at No. 2 singles when Stephanie Haldeman's opponent retired at 3-2. The 'Lopes' No. 1, Cecilia Vergnet, gave the 12th-ranked player in the country a good match, losing 6-4, 6-2, while Mandy Prudhomme and Ali Brackey lost a close 8-6 match at No. 3 doubles.
