The Grand Canyon University men's soccer team, ranked No. 3 in the West Region in the official NCAA Division II poll and No. 3 in the region and No. 20 in the nation in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America vote, played to a 1-1, double-overtime tie with Notre Dame de Namur in a crucial Pacific West Conference showdown today at Koret Field in Belmont, Calif.
The winner of today's game would have had the inside track for the PacWest championship, but since neither team won the season will go down to the final two games. The Antelopes (12-2-2 overall, 10-1-1 in the PacWest) will play Chaminade (1-10-1, 0-9-1) on Wednesday and Friday at the GCU Soccer Field (both games kick off at 5:45 p.m.). The Argonauts (12-2-2, 9-1-2) will host Academy of Art (5-9-0, 4-6-0) and Dominican (3-9-3, 3-6-2) on Thursday and Sunday, respectively.
NDNU, which had a nine-game unbeaten streak and seven days to prepare for today's game, is ranked No. 4 in the West Region in both the NCAA and NSCAA polls.
GCU had just one day to get ready for the Argos, having beaten Academy of Art 1-0 on Thursday in San Francisco.
This was the second time this season that the 'Lopes have faced NDNU in Belmont. They defeated the Argos 2-0 on Sept. 22. NDNU has not come to Phoenix even once this year.
GCU is trying to win the PacWest title for the fourth time in the five-year history of men's soccer in the PacWest. More importantly, it is trying to secure a berth in the national championship tournament. The NCAA does not provide automatic qualifiers for men's soccer, so the PacWest champion is not guaranteed a spot in the tournament. The top four teams in each region, regardless of conference affiliation, are awarded berths in the postseason.
Sophomore forward
Kyle Ciliento (Phoenix, AZ/Pinnacle, Saint Mary's College of California) scored the 'Lopes' only goal in today's game in the 74th minute off of an assist from junior midfielder
Mitchell Garcia (Avondale, AZ/Agua Fria, Phoenix College). The goal, which came after the Argos took a 1-0 lead in the 59th minute on a goal by midfielder Christian Rosales, was scored on a set piece. It was Ciliento's 19th of the season. He leads the nation in goals, goals per game, points and points per game.
"Today we played a very, very good team," Head Coach Petar Draksin said. "I have a tremendous amount of respect for their program.
"It's a very good result. Obviously an excellent result is if you win, but we'll take a tie."
GCU had two legitimate chances to score in the first half, but it didn't convert either of them and gave NDNU life.
The Argos had a 14-10 advantage in shots in the game (including nine in the second half), as well as a 4-2 edge in corner kicks.
Twenty-eight fouls were called, 15 of which were on NDNU. Two yellow cards were issued, one on each team.
The Argos are an outstanding defensive team. They rank seventh in the country with a 0.59 goals-against average and second in shutout percentage with 10 shutouts in 15 games. Goalkeeper Isiah Castro is fourth in goals-against average at 0.43 and sixth in save percentage at 0.86. Entering today's game, Castro was riding a 633-minute scoreless streak and recorded four shutouts in NDNU's 4-0-1 trip to Hawaii last week.
Castro recorded four saves in today's game. GCU senior keeper
Ben Paneccasio (Sydney, Australia/Rosebank College, Tyler Junior College) had two.
