No. 22 GCU, UCSD Play to Scoreless Draw![]()
One hundred and 10 minutes of action. No goals for either side.
So it went for Grand Canyon University (GCU), No. 22 in the NSCAA Division II national rankings and No. 3 in the West regional rankings, and UC San Diego (UCSD), No. 6 in the West region, in a non-conference men's soccer game today at the Seawolf Classic in Rohnert Park, Calif. The Antelopes (1-1-1) and Tritons (3-0-1) played to a 0-0, two-overtime tie in a battle between two evenly-matched sides.
UC San Diego had a 14-9 shot advantage, but neither team mounted much of an offensive threat as there were only five shots on goal (three by GCU) the entire game. The teams combined for seven yellow cards (four on UCSD) and 29 fouls (17 against GCU).
'Lopes junior goalkeeper Ben Paneccasio (pictured; Sydney, Australia/Roseban K College) made two saves in recording his first shutout for GCU.
Senior defender/midfielder Jesse Baker (Lakeside, AZ/Blue Ridge) and junior midfielder/forward Pat Perkins (Bremerton, WA/Bremerton) each had three shots on goal for the 'Lopes. Freshman forward Kyle Ciliento (Phoenix, AZ/Pinnacle), who scored two goals in GCU's season-opening win over defending national champion Cal State Dominguez Hills and the lone goal in its 2-1 loss to Sonoma State on Friday, had just one shot and no shots on goal against the Tritons.
Although GCU had no corner kicks in the first half, it finished with a total of eight, including five in a four-minute span toward the end of regulation.
The 'Lopes host Mesa State on Friday at 7:30 p.m. at the GCU Soccer Field.
