Men's Soccer opens with NCAA Champs
Grand Canyon University men's soccer team will open the 2009 season with NCAA Division II National Champion Cal State Dominguez Hills at home Saturday, Aug. 29 at 7:30 p.m.
Dominguez Hills, whom GCU played in the first round of the 2007 NCAA National Tournament, became the second West Region team to win the national title in four years. Seattle University won it in 2005. Grand Canyon's 3-2 win over Seattle on Oct. 21, 2006 went a long way in preventing the Redhawks from advancing the national tournament the year after they won the championship.
GCU last hosted Dominguez Hills in 2007. The Antelopes have played the Toros every year for the past 20 seasons.
"I'm excited about Dominguez Hills winning the national championship, and I'm excited about opening up the season against them," Grand Canyon coach Petar Draksin said. "What a way to open the season, with the No. 1 team in the nation."
GCU will play this year's No. 6 West Region-ranked UC San Diego and Top 25 Sonoma State in Rohnert Park, Calif., on Sept. 5-7, following the season opener with CSUDH. Grand Canyon then returns home to play Mesa State (Colo.) and Western Washington at home Sept. 11-15.
"This year's non-conference schedule is better scheduled than it's been in the last 6-7 years," Draksin said. "Our first three games are critical."
